What is mercury?
Mercury is a silver-colored liquid metal that:
is highly toxic
can be found in liquid and vapor forms; vapors cannot be seen or smelled
does not dissolve in water or alcohol
has a metallic taste
Why is mercury dangerous?
When spilled, mercury breaks into tiny beads that roll and can stick to surfaces.
Spilled or improperly stored mercury may:
evaporate and contaminate the air you breathe
remain in the air and environment for a long time
How can I be exposed to mercury?
Mercury is used in some industrial and household items. It may be found in:
thermometers
thermostats
fluorescent lighting
batteries
clothes irons with automatic shut-off features
athletic shoes with flashing lights in the soles (made before 1997)
latex and oil-based paints (made before 1991)
Mercury is also used in some spiritual and cultural practices.
For example, mercury may be:
burned in oil lamps and candles
added to creams, perfumes, or bathwater
sprinkled on floors in homes or cars
stored in very small containers that are worn or carried by people
swallowed
| No metabolic functions are known for which mercury is required. At high concentrations, mercury causes liver and kidney damage and neurological symptoms. Interest has grown in the possible ill health effects of mercury liberated from dental amalgam fillings as well as the increased consumption of fish contaminated with mercury. Hair is used as an index of internal accumulation of mercury provided it was not externally contaminated by exposure to mercury vapor. |
