A beautiful smile must have white teeth as its major characteristic. One may have been brushing correctly but their teeth are still discolored and are wondering how to make them white again. However, there are other things that one may be doing which may be discoloring their teeth without their knowledge. Here is what to use to common ingredients for teeth whitening and how to keep your teeth from getting stained.
Baking soda is a natural tooth whitener hence also used in commercial toothpaste. It helps to scrub the tooth surface since it is a mild abrasive. In addition to that, it creates an alkaline environment in the mouth which makes it hard for the bacteria to grow. One can make the paste by mixing two tablespoons of water with two tablespoons of baking soda.
Hydrogen peroxide has many other health benefits due to its antibacterial properties. One can mix diluted hydrogen peroxide with baking soda and use it to brush their teeth. However, caution should be taken to ensure that one uses properly diluted hydrogen peroxide since it may cause gum irritation if not properly diluted. There are other concerns that high doses of hydrogen peroxide may cause cancer though it has not been proven. One can get the correct diluted hydrogen peroxide of 3% which can be diluted with equal parts of water to make it 1.5% concentrated.
Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is also used as a disinfectant and a natural cleaning product as well. Acetic acid found in the vinegar also makes it antibacterial in nature making it an important ingredient for mouth cleaning and teeth whitening. Since acetic acid may erode the tooth enamel, one is advised not to use apple cider vinegar daily. One should also limit the time the vinegar will have contact with the teeth.
Fruits and vegetables
A diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables is not only good for your teeth but your overall health as well. To help whiten one’s teeth, one can include crunchy fruits, raw vegetables, and other raw fruits in the diet. The fruits and vegetables will help to rub the plaque away which may be staining your teeth. One should not do away with brushing but use the fruits and vegetables as a complementary means of brushing. Some of the fruits that are good at teeth whitening are strawberries which have malic acid to help get rid of discoloration.
Limit foods that stain teeth
Some foods known to stain teeth are coffee, dark berries, and red wines. One may not have to avoid them totally but may choose to limit them and the time they are in contact with your teeth. If possible one may opt to use a straw instead of drinking directly. One is also encouraged to brush immediately after taking these drinks to avoid staining the teeth. One should also avoid smoking or chewing tobacco since it may discolor the teeth.
Limit sugar intake
Too much sugar is not good for your health. It also promotes the growth of bacteria known as Streptococcus mutans which causes plaque and gingivitis as well.
